AI Compass / Quick reads

A long-running job needs no model while nothing is happening

Automation Costs

The cheapest AI call is the one that never happens. Check first, then wake.

In depth: Long-running jobs that wake the model only on change – wake gate

A job that asks a language model every few minutes whether there is anything new pays for every “no” as well. With the Hermes Agent, AI LABS shows a wake gate: a simple check script decides by itself whether anything has changed and wakes the agent only then. Pure monitoring, for example of certificates or payments, runs entirely without a model. In Hermes the signal is {"wakeAgent": false} according to the docs (docs checked). The pattern does not need Hermes, though; a Linux scheduler and a script are enough. In the video, replies and payments run without approval. I advise approval before every action.

Tool and alternative

Hermes Agent has played no role in the channels reviewed since September. Cron or systemd timers on Linux are free and sufficient.
