AI Compass / Quick reads
A map of the code only pays off for large projects
A map helps in a big city. In your own village you find your way without one.
In depth: Project map instead of rereading – Claude Code with a code map
Claude Code searches its way through the repo anew in every session. Graphify instead generates a map of modules and connections once, locally and without a language model according to the README (externally checked). Jack Roberts has questions answered through the Graphify skill (8 June) and advises asking whether the map was really used (25 Apr). According to Jack, it pays off from about 500 files. The alternative Graft is now called Trail-code and attaches matching locations to every prompt via a hook. The vendor figures are big; AI LABS’ own test shows a small gain: 39 instead of 47 minutes, 31 instead of 35% context (8 Sept).
Tool and alternative
Graphify is free (Apache 2.0): uv tool install graphifyy with a double “y”; the repo is now under Graphify-Labs. Trail-code is free (MIT): npm install -g @trailhq/trail-code, trail init. It writes hooks globally into ~/.claude/settings.json, reads your old sessions in the repo once and sends anonymous usage data, which can be disabled (according to the README). Alternative without a tool: a short architecture overview in the CLAUDE.md.
